Beacon Models is developing collections of 1/144 scale plastic model kits, based on captivating periods of history! We are beginning this journey with “The Few” – a range of ten aircraft from The Battle of Britain, featuring all your favourites as exquisitely detailed models. The planned range includes:

Another Emil marking scheme ready for inspection. This one is something a bit different, depicting what I think is a rather fetching scheme of the "Condor Legion" - the Luftwaffe unit that was sent to fight for nationalist forces during the Spanish Civil War in 1938. This was the Emil's first deployment in active combat, and immediately proved itself as an extremely capable fighter. The most striking feature is the overall RLM63 paint scheme. Evidence suggests that this was applied in the field, and the locally sourced paint faded quickly into a light greenish grey colour, which we have estimated here. This aircraft as flown by Oblt. Schmoller-Haldy is often depicted by modellers as an E-3 variant, however through examination of photographic evidence (and thank you to our community for helping us find it,) we are certain that this aircraft was in fact one of the small number of E-1 variants delivered to the unit, lacking the FF cannons fitted to the E-3 variant onwards. Instead, it carried four 7.92 mm machineguns, two above the nose and one in each wing. The next wave of releases this summer will cover several variants of Merlin powered Spitfires, and Bf109 Emils. Twelve new schemes is a lot of work, and must be researched and verified as meticulously as possible, often with scant evidence. So although it's slow going, we march ever onwards to being finished with Spitfires and Emils and moving onto the kits in the Battle of Britain range. From now on, we'll probably offer fewer initial scheme choices and instead focus on making new plastic tools as quickly as possible. #bf109 #spanishcivilwar #messerschmitt109 #battleofbritain #144scale #scalemodels
While slowly getting through the design work for the next kits, I've had lots of time to think. I've been thinking about what models mean to me, what they mean to you, and what ultimately I want Beacon Models to be about. It's more than the models, no matter what types of models we go on to produce. It's a place in time, a feeling - our own memories and the memories of those we never knew, but who's lives endure in our imagination. I've been so delighted seeing so many of you making mini dioramas and vignettes with the kits, and telling fascinating stories and snapshots from real history. It seems that 1/144 scale lends itself to that, which I had suspected but I could never have dreamt I'd see the quality and creativity of the work that's been done using the Beacon kits. It's still slow going with such a small team, but I think this year we will really start to move forward, telling new stories and preserving more memories. I'm looking forward to seeing what our wonderful community comes up with in 2024. Will.
Here's a first look at our upcoming "Hangar Edition" kits! These editions of the kits will contain one aircraft, with two marking options as well as instructions. A simple and good value product aimed at those who want to try a kit out, or add another marking scheme to their collection. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dave Humphreys, a good friend to Beacon from the very beginning. Dave passed on the 10th November 2023, the day before he was due to travel with his clubmates from Red Dragon Modellers to exhibit at Scale Model World. It grieved us to learn of this over the show weekend. Known on Instagram as @bangormodeller, he was a very talented modeller and enthusiastic about the Beacon Models vision from the very beginning. He was in regular contact with me, helping with research and planning his builds. His beautiful Spitfire Mk.I PR had a magazine feature which helped introduce us to many new members of the Beacon community, and as this is a community we feel the loss of such a good friend very deeply. We truly appreciate all our modelling friends. Dave's friends and family feel ready for us and other scale modellers to pay tribute to him here. If you have any memories of Dave, please do share them in the comments. Myself, Bryan and Mike are keeping his loved ones in our thoughts. Rest in peace Dave.
