The development of the Volkswagen Kübelwagen began in the early 1930s with small numbers produced as the design was refined, however by early 1940 the Type 82 production Kübelwagen was being delivered to German military units in great numbers. This simple and robust transport and utility vehicle designed by Ferdinand Porsche went on to see over 50,000 units manufactured by the end of the war with almost no change to the design, and was widely regarded as a useful and reliable vehicle that proved effective in all theatres of the war. Examples served in many branches of Nazi German military including the Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht among others.
